The Khamsa (or Hamsa) symbol has been used as a protective amulet by many faith traditions throughout history, including followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Depicting the open palm of the right hand, the name Hamsa (or Khamsa in Arabic) is derived from the root meaning "five". For some Muslims it signifies the five verses of , seeking Allah's refuge from evil. For others in Islamic tradition, the five fingers represent the . Yet other Muslims call it the "Hand of Fatima", referencing the members of the Prophet  daughter  family; those five people over whom the Prophet held a cloth.
